Genders are represented in the TV series The Inbetweeners as
different and how they act with each other. Firstly in the start scene Simon
and Carli are kissing, this may represent how genders act if they are alone
also Simon goes to do further actions to Cali but she stops him, this may
represent how males act in this situation and how woman may think that this is
all what males want. The way they are both dressed is casual, which is
stereotypical of students, and also people of that age in that time. Also Cali
is wearing a top that shows of her shoulder, and this may be represented as her
trying to show off, stereotypical of girls in that time.
In the shot Simon is positioned on the left hand side of the
bed, this may show that this is not his bed on how he is at the end, with Cali
being in the middle of the bed to show that it is hers, which explains that
they are in Carlis' room. At the start there was a close up on Simon and Cali
kissing, this is to show the expressions on both of their faces, it shows that
Simon is enjoying it which is stereotypical of males. We also see a long shot
after Simon has left Carlis’ house, this is to show the happy stride Simon is
taking walking up into his room, representing how happy he is breaking up with
her, but later we see a long shot of Simon on his bed, when he suddenly starts
crying which represents how males react after a breakup. The way in which the
shots were edited together creates the effect that they are in a normal
situation in a break up, they made the effect that the breakup was slow, but in
the shots oh Simon coming home, the shots are quick to create the effect that
he is rushing upstairs to then a long lasting shot of him crying on his bed to make
the audience feel sympathetic towards him, also we can relate as it is a real
life situation.
The different sounds in the clips are mostly the same with
the non-diegetic sound being calm as the kiss in the first close up shot. This
also represents how calm they are in the situation. There is also diegetic
sound from Simon and Carli as they are talking. Simon says that he is happy and
nothing is wrong and everything is perfect, and this may show how males act in
the relationship when they get into a little argument. Although when Carli
speaks, she sounds more distressed and cold whilst speaking to Simon. This may
show how females can react in these situation being cold and harsh, this is not
directed to all girls.
The audience is meant to look at these characters as they
are in a complicated situation and there is no way of getting out of it for
Simon. In the first clip where Simon is in Carlis room, we see that Carli is
the one who is in charge because of the way she pushes Simon off him, this
shows dominance in Carli which is a non-stereotype of woman. We also see when
Carli breaks up with Simon the audience will look at her face due to the close
up, and feel mad at her as she has no expression on her face. The importance of
Simon in this situation is very low as he is not in control of the situation,
this is further seen when he goes home into in bed and starts crying, which the
audience will feel sorry for because they saw what happened in the earlier
scenes, and can relate somehow. The setting also can represent the importance
of characters, for example they are in Carlis room which suggests she is the
one in power, and can control what Simon does (pushing him of her). Finally the
audience can understand Simon when he is walking through his house by the music
that is playing, by how the same music was playing when he was kissing Carli to
represent that he is happy, even though he isn’t and the audience knows that,
which makes him week and less powerful in the situation.
